Roll-on/roll-off
RoRo Shipping from the USA
Roll-on/roll-off shipping for running cars, trucks, machinery and trailered boats. Your vehicle is driven onto a RoRo vessel at one of 9 U.S. RoRo ports and driven off at the destination port, in 95 countries.
A vehicle deck instead of a box
A RoRo vessel is a floating parking garage. Terminal drivers take your vehicle up the stern ramp, park it on a vehicle deck and lash it down. At the destination port it is driven off the same way. There is no container, so there is nothing to load, brace or seal.
From terminal to destination
Delivered to the RoRo terminal
The vehicle reaches the U.S. RoRo port by truck or on its own wheels before the carrier's cutoff.
Driven aboard and lashed
Terminal drivers park it on a vehicle deck and secure it with lashings to the deck fittings.
Driven off at the destination
At the arrival port it rolls off to the terminal yard, where the importer or their broker clears it.

Why Choose Us
Why book RoRo through Seaway Export
We are a freight forwarder: we book space with RoRo carriers, prepare the U.S. export paperwork and tell you plainly when another method fits better.
The right U.S. port for the lane
Not every port has a RoRo berth. Georgia RoRo loads at Brunswick and Southern California RoRo at Port Hueneme; we route your booking to the port that serves your destination.
Paperwork before the cutoff
Title review and the export filing are done before the vehicle reaches the terminal, so it is not held at the gate.
A straight answer on fit
If the vehicle does not run, carries cargo or the lane has no RoRo, we say so and quote a container or flat rack instead.
One quote across methods
Where a lane has RoRo and container service, the quote shows both so you can compare price and transit.
FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
RoRo (roll-on/roll-off) shipping moves vehicles on specialized vessels with internal ramps and vehicle decks. Terminal drivers drive the vehicle aboard at the U.S. port, lash it to the deck and drive it off at the destination port. There is no container, so the vehicle must run, steer and brake under its own power, and nothing may be packed inside it.
We book RoRo from New York / New Jersey, Baltimore, Jacksonville, Miami, Houston, Freeport and Seattle / Tacoma, plus two RoRo gateways. Savannah has no RoRo berth, so Georgia RoRo cargo loads at Brunswick (Colonel's Island Terminal). Los Angeles / Long Beach RoRo cargo loads at Port Hueneme in Ventura County. Each port has its own page with the destinations it serves.
No. RoRo vehicles are driven on and off the vessel, so a vehicle that will not start, steer or brake is refused at the terminal. Non-running and salvage vehicles ship by container instead, where they are loaded by forklift or winch.
No. RoRo carriers do not accept personal items, spare parts or loose cargo inside the vehicle, and terminals check for them. Only factory-fitted equipment such as the spare tire and jack may stay. If you need to ship belongings with the vehicle, a container lets you load declared cargo listed on a packing list.
Carriers and terminals set the limit, and it is commonly a quarter tank or less. That figure is carrier and terminal practice, not a number in federal regulations. The federal rule for vehicles carried by vessel, 49 CFR 176.905, deals with fuel leaks and battery security. We confirm the exact limit for your carrier when you book.
It depends on the vehicle and the lane. RoRo is priced by the space a unit takes on deck, so it is often the better value for large, tall or heavy running vehicles that would need a dedicated container or a flat rack. For a standard car on a busy lane, a shared container is often comparable. Where a lane has both services, we quote both so you can compare price and transit time.
