Every honest quote for shipping a car overseas breaks down into the same four buckets. Knowing them is the fastest way to compare forwarders apples-to-apples — and to spot a "cheap" quote that quietly leaves two of the four out.

• Ocean freight — the cost of moving the container or RoRo space from a U.S. port to the destination port. This is the largest line item, set by the lane, the carrier, and current fuel surcharges. For a sedan in a shared container it runs $1,100–$3,800 depending on region.
• Inland U.S. transport — getting the car from the seller, auction yard, or your driveway to our port warehouse. Expect $150–$600 for most pickups; remote states cost more. If you can deliver the car to the warehouse yourself, this line drops to zero.
• Destination charges — port handling, container unloading, document release, and the customs broker's fee at arrival. Typically $300–$800 and paid locally. Any quote that says "all-in" without naming these is worth a second question.
• Duties and taxes — import duty, VAT or sales tax, and any registration levies charged by the destination country on the vehicle's value. These are never part of the freight quote because they depend on your country, your car's age, and its declared value — more on this below.

Shared container vs. dedicated container vs. RoRo

The pricing logic is simple: a 40ft container costs roughly the same to move whether it holds one car or four. In a shared (consolidated) container, 3–4 vehicles heading to the same port split that cost — which is why shared rates start around $1,100 and it is the default choice for most buyers. The trade-off is that your car waits until the container fills, usually a few days to two weeks on busy lanes.

A dedicated 20ft container ($2,200–$4,300 depending on lane) ships on the next available vessel with only your vehicle inside — the choice for high-value cars, tight deadlines, or shipments with extra cargo. RoRo (roll-on/roll-off) runs $1,200–$3,000 where the service exists — mainly Northern Europe, West Africa, and the Gulf — and requires a running, drivable vehicle with nothing packed inside.

What makes your price higher or lower

• Vehicle size — a sedan takes one of four slots in a shared 40ft container; a full-size SUV, van, or pickup takes the space of a car and a half. Expect 20–40% over sedan rates, and oversize trucks may need a dedicated container or flat rack.
• Departure coast — East Coast and Gulf ports (New Jersey, Savannah, Houston) are cheapest for Europe, Africa, and the Middle East; West Coast ports win for Asia and Oceania. Shipping "against" your coast adds inland rail or trucking.
• Season and fuel — carriers adjust bunker (fuel) surcharges quarterly, and rates firm up before holiday peaks. The same lane can move $100–$300 between a soft month and a peak month.
• Non-running surcharge — vehicles that don't start or roll require forklift loading and blocking, adding $150–$300 at the warehouse. RoRo is off the table entirely for non-runners.

Duties and taxes are a separate budget line

No freight quote — ours or anyone's — includes import duties, because they are charged by the destination government on the vehicle's value, not on the shipping. The ranges differ enormously: the EU charges 10% duty plus roughly 20% VAT on the car's value and freight combined, while GCC countries (UAE, Saudi Arabia) charge a flat 5%. Some markets are far friendlier to specific vehicles: classics over 30 years old typically enter the EU at 0% duty and a reduced VAT rate as collector's items.
