Shipping to Azerbaijan: What You Need to Know

Azerbaijan sets three conditions before a passenger car can be imported: it must be no more than 10 years from its production date, meet Euro 4 or a higher emissions standard, and have ABS and at least one airbag. Right-hand-drive cars cannot be cleared. Most U.S. cars from the last decade pass all three, but the production date on the door label counts, not the model year, so we check it from the VIN before you bid.

Charges are set by engine size. Import duty on a used car is $0.70 per cm³ up to 1,500 cm³ and $1.20 per cm³ above it, excise starts at 0.30 manat per cm³ and climbs steeply over 3,000 cm³, and 18% VAT is charged on the total. Petrol cars more than seven years old pay 1.5 times the excise and diesels twice. Cars sail to Poti and continue by road or rail to Baku, about 31–45 days from the East Coast.

Key takeaway

Buy within 10 years of the production date, with ABS, an airbag and Euro 4 compliance. A smaller engine and a car under seven years old keep Azerbaijan's per-cm³ duty and excise down; 18% VAT applies to every car, electric ones included.

No more than 10 years from its production date. The limit has applied to passenger cars since April 2023 under Cabinet of Ministers Decision No. 94; collector cars over 40 years old in original condition are excepted. The car must also meet Euro 4 and have ABS and at least one airbag.

From engine size. A used car pays $0.70 per cm³ of duty up to 1,500 cm³ and $1.20 per cm³ above it, plus excise from 0.30 manat per cm³, then 18% VAT on the customs value, duty and excise, plus customs, registration and recycling fees. Excise on cars over seven years old is multiplied by 1.5 for petrol and 2 for diesel.

Repairable cars can clear if they meet the age, Euro 4, ABS and airbag conditions. Azerbaijan turns away vehicles written off as scrap, cars with severe structural damage, and any car whose VIN or engine number has been altered or does not match its papers. Send us the auction listing before you bid and we check it against these rules.

About 31–43 days from New York/New Jersey and 33–45 days from Savannah, both weekly, and 36–48 days from Houston every two weeks. That covers the ocean leg to Poti and the overland leg across Georgia to Baku.
