About the terminal

How Garden City Terminal works

GPA assigns each Garden City call to a berth by crane class. The class letters in the schedule (A to D) describe the crane height a ship needs: taller ships with more tiers of containers need the taller cranes at Berth 1 or Berths 7 and 8. A ship's berth can change at short notice when the export load or the crane height it needs changes.

Export containers are received at the gate between the begin receive date (BRD) and the end receive date (ERD) shown for each call. The ERD is the terminal's deadline; each ocean carrier sets its own cargo cutoff, which can be earlier, so always confirm the cutoff on your booking.

Ships that arrive before their berth is free wait at anchor off the coast. GPA's board groups them by the berth range they are waiting for, which is why some calls show a crane class but no berth yet.

When the ship is expected to finish work and sail.

BRD · Begin receive date
The first day the terminal accepts export containers for this call.
ERD · End receive date (cargo cutoff)
The terminal's last time to accept dry export containers for the call. Reefer and hazardous cargo can have their own cutoffs.
Locked · Receive dates locked
GPA has fixed the BRD and ERD for the call. Before that, receive dates can still move with the ship's ETA.
Crane class · Berth crane height
The crane height a ship needs, A (120 ft) to D (165 ft). It decides which Garden City berths can work the ship.
At anchor · Waiting for a berth
The ship has arrived off Savannah and is waiting for its berth to free up. Its ETA at the berth can still change.
Slot carrier · Carrier with space on another line's ship
Many ships carry boxes for several lines. The vessel operator runs the ship; partners buy space on it and publish the sailing under their own names.

Garden City Terminal questions

What is the difference between the ERD and the carrier's cargo cutoff?

The ERD (end receive date) is the last time Garden City Terminal accepts an export container for that ship. The carrier's cargo cutoff is the carrier's own deadline and can be earlier. GPA notes that carrier cutoffs may not match its published end receive dates, so the booking confirmation is the date to plan around.

Why does a ship show a crane class but no berth?

GPA plans berths by crane class. A ship waiting at anchor, or one more than a day or two out, is assigned a class (for example A, B, C) before it gets a specific berth such as CB03.

Does Garden City Terminal handle RoRo vehicles?

No. Georgia's RoRo traffic for cars and self-propelled machinery runs through Colonel's Island Terminal at the Port of Brunswick. Garden City handles containers, which is how we load cars, boats and machinery in Savannah.
